Empowering Parents and Restoring Excellence in Michigan Education
Michigan First fights for real Education Freedom, where parents—not bureaucrats or unions—ultimately decide how their children are educated. Every child in Michigan deserves a quality, values-based education that prepares them for success, instills character, and respects family rights. Our government-monopoly school system too often indoctrinates, undermines moral character, allows crony special interests to set policy, and enshrines one-size-fits-all mandates that are divorced from parents’ actual values and their children’s needs.
We won’t stand by as Michigan’s kids fall behind: declining test scores and graduation rates, indoctrination in place of academics, censorship of facts, and censorship of opposing viewpoints.
We will end the rigged game where government monopolies trap taxpayer dollars in underperforming government schools while families who choose private, charter, homeschool, or alternative options get nothing.
Michigan First will make Michigan the national leader in school choice and parental empowerment.
Bold Plan for Education Freedom
Universal School Choice: Follow the money to the child, not the institution. Allow every family to access their state per-pupil dollars through an Education Freedom Account to use for public, private, charter, religious, online, homeschool co-ops, tutors, therapies, or any other educational services that meet their children’s needs. The zip code a child is born into should not determine their future.
Expand Charter Schools & Innovation: Eliminate caps on charter schools and make it easier for innovative, high-performing new charters to open. Support specialized academies in skilled trades, STEM, classical education, arts, or faith-based learning.
Homeschool Freedom: Free homeschool families from burdensome regulations and eliminate excessive reporting and state oversight requirements. Protect families’ right to educate their children according to their values.
Empower Teachers & Principals: Cut administrative bloat and give classroom teachers and school leaders real power over curriculum, discipline, and budget decisions. Empower excellence and create pathways to enter the profession.
Values-Based & Academically Rigorous Curriculum: Bring back proven basics like reading, writing, math, science, history, and civics taught with patriotism and truth. Ban divisive critical race theory and other ideologies that pit students against one another. Support classical education models that build character, critical thinking skills, and virtue.
Parental Rights Protection
Codify parents’ rights to know: full access to curriculum, library materials, and school records; opt out of lessons their children should not be exposed to; and final say over medical or social decisions made at school. End secret transitions or withholding information from parents.
Safe & Disciplined Schools: Restore order through clear discipline policies, support for teachers, and zero tolerance for violence or disruptions. Give schools the tools to maintain safe environments so learning can flourish.
Trade & Vocational Pathways: Expand career and technical education starting in middle school. Partner with Michigan businesses to create apprenticeships, certifications, and direct pathways to high-paying, high-skill jobs in manufacturing, healthcare, energy, and tech.
Transparency & Accountability: Require public posting of all curriculum materials, spending, and performance data. Tie funding to results, not enrollment numbers. Strengthen school boards to give parents real-time insight and a voice.
Education is the bedrock of a free society. When parents are empowered and children are equipped with knowledge, skills, and virtue, Michigan wins.
No more trapping kids in failing systems. No more government overriding parents. Education Freedom means every child gets the education that’s right for them—chosen by the people who love them most.
Patriots united: We put parents in charge and children first.
