The Second Amendment: For God and Country 

The right to keep and bear arms is absolutely sacrosanct to Michigan First. The Second Amendment is what secures our God-given rights and keeps all others from being trampled on. A free and armed people are the best defense against tyranny, criminals, and anarchy.

Our right to self-defense, hunting, sport shooting, and the protection of our families, communities, and our state shall not be infringed upon by out-of-state billionaires, the elitist in Lansing, or the ACLU.

Gun owners in Michigan have had more and more of their rights infringed on over the last several years: red flag laws with insufficient due process protections, limits on magazine capacity, burdensome permitting requirements, and attempts to ban commonly owned firearms. Extremist anti-gun, anti-hunting, and anti-sport shooting movements pushed by billionaires, radical leftist legislators, anti-law enforcement groups, and the ACLU have one goal in mind: to disarm law-abiding citizens and put them in prison for exercising their constitutional right, all while doing nothing to stop violent criminals.

Michigan First will fight back against anti-gun legislation in the Michigan legislature and stop the attacks on our freedom to defend ourselves, our families, our state, and our country.

The Michigan First Policy Agenda: Strengthen Second Amendment Rights

We must make Michigan a Constitutional Carry state. We will enact permitless concealed carry for all law-abiding citizens age 21 and over. This means no fees, no training requirements, no waiting periods, no government “permission slip” to exercise your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

We will repeal or fix “Red-Flag” laws to provide iron-clad due process. Extreme risk protection orders (i.e. “Red-Flag Laws”) allow law enforcement to seize someone’s guns, often with little or no notice, a hearing, or evidence. Current law puts the burden of proof on the gun owner to stop the confiscation of their firearms. We will require clear and convincing evidence, immediate judicial review, and stiff penalties for false and frivolous reports.

Local control of firearms laws in Michigan is a thing of the past. We will prohibit cities, counties, townships, and school districts from enacting their own firearm restrictions. This will ensure all of Michigan has strong, uniform firearms protections.

We will expand our state’s Stand-Your-Ground and Castle Doctrine laws. No law-abiding citizen should have a duty to retreat if they are in their home, car, or another place where they have a legal right to be and are confronted by someone they believe is threatening them with unlawful force.

Michigan First opposes bans on common rifles, shotguns, or ammunition. We will expand access to public land for hunting and shooting sports and support youth firearm education programs. We will also support funding for our state’s conservation efforts through excise taxes on hunting equipment and ammunition.

We will not allow our schools to be turned into prisons. Michigan First supports allowing trained, voluntary school personnel to carry concealed firearms as a way to harden our schools against potential attackers.

We will remove state-level restrictions on suppressors (also known as “silencers”) and short-barreled rifles and shotguns that are not more restrictive than existing federal law.

We will pass a law to protect Michigan’s firearms industry from being crippled by frivolous lawsuits designed to drive up liability insurance costs and bankrupt manufacturers, dealers, and sellers.

We will ensure that veterans and active-duty military and law enforcement do not lose their right to carry after returning home.

The federal government needs to stop trampling on our rights too.

We will work to nullify any unconstitutional rules and regulations from the ATF, oppose the creation of a national gun registry through the expansion of universal background checks, and we will never allow for the confiscation of lawfully owned firearms and magazines. The Second Amendment is not just about hunting or sport shooting, it is the last defense of tyranny. When law-abiding citizens are armed to protect themselves, criminals think twice, and the government remembers who is in charge.

Michigan First will make our state the ultimate sanctuary for the Second Amendment. Where gun owners are not only respected, but protected and empowered.
